‘Arizona Sun’ is a red and yellow gaillardia that
produces flowers continuously. Even the spent blooms are attractive as tufts of
seed. When grown in full sun, Arizona Sun is a compact plant only 8 to 10 inches
tall, spreading 10 to 12 inches. It blooms the first year from seed although the
gaillardia is usually considered a half-hardy perennial. In mild winters, this
one may over-winter. The flowers are good as cut flowers and may attract
butterflies.
‘First Kiss Blueberry’ is almost blue, a first for a
vinca. The blooms are large blue-violet and have a darker eye. The plants are
heat and drought tolerant. Mature plants will be about 11 inches tall and spread
16 inches. First Kiss does well in patio containers or combination planters.
‘Magellan Coral’ has been rated superior to other
zinnia varieties as the bright coral blooms illuminate the garden. The blooms
are fully double, 5 to 6 inches across and do best in full sun. Mature plants
are 15 to 17 inches tall, and spread up to 19 inches.
‘Fairy Tale’ is a petite eggplant, with decorative
miniature violet-purple striped fruit that is sweet, tender skinned with few
seeds. The eggplants can be picked when very small or allowed to grow and still
remain sweet and tender. The harvest begins in 49 days from transplants. An
eggplant has not won an AAS award since 1939, but this one is exceptional.
Winter Squash ‘Bonbon’ is early, needs less space and
has superior taste. Mature vines spread only 8 feet and in a full sun garden can
be harvested 81 days from transplanting. The flavor is very sweet, thus its
name, Bonbon. The golden fleshed fruit is loaded with vitamin A. The boxy-shaped
fruit is dark green with silver stripes on the outside. This squash does well
anywhere squash is grown.
