Round Leaf Orchid (Platanthera orbiculata) Campers on a "nature scavenger hunt" were thrilled to discover this showy orchid growing near a construction site along a newly widened road. A new camper, Christy Luehrman, from Region 11, discovered the plant and asked her fellow team mates what it was. To
the thrill of me, Maureen Wooton and Sydney Harmon we identified it as Hookers Orchid from our plant ID books. After
conferring with Steve McKee at the Gorman Nature Center we were convinced that it was "Round Leaf Orchid" as Hookers has not been seen in the USA in over 100 years. The only difference between the two, according to Steve, is the small leaf bracts that occur on the stem of Round Leaf and the color of the flowers, which are more green then yellow, as in Hookers. But, we were thrilled to discover this plant, even though it is know to be in the Mohican area. An orchid find of any kind is wonderful. Good for you Christy!
