HOW TO:

GARDENING APRONS –

If you choose nail aprons from hardware or decorating store, they may have printed advertisements on them, you will decorate the back of yours and wear it backwards.

1.  Cover your work surface with newspapers and place the apron on them.

2.  Sketch your design in pencil first.  Flowers, fairies, worms, fruits, and bugs all make a good subject matter.

3.  Color in your design using markers or acrylic paints.

DRAGONFLY SEED MOSAIC –

Seeds can be collected or purchased from the grocery store, discount stores, pet food stores (bird seed), or any farmer’s seed exchange.  Think of using some of these dried seeds: oats, wheat, barley, flax, rye, corn, soybean, navy, lima, kidney and other field beans, sunflower, millet, safflower, sorghum, sugar beat, grass seed, clover, alfalfa, or wild rice. Any flower seeds, bird seed, lentils, popcorn. Anything but weed seed!

Take an outline of a dragonfly – the state chairperson has sent a sample to each junior garden club.  Attach the seeds to the background with Elmer’s glue. Use plenty of glue.

Do small areas at a time. Have the seeds handy in saucers or cups. Use a round toothpick or similar tool and place a small amount of glue on it for picking up and placing the seeds. Large seeds can be handled with tweezers or the fingers. Keep glue off the surface where no seeds will be applied. Allow the glue to dry hard. Avoid flexing the support board during the drying.

Use a clear lacquer spray, or clear varnish, over the seeds after the glue has dried thoroughly. The finish coat will hold the seeds together better and it will also bring more luster and color out of the seeds used.
