JAPANESE ARRANGEMENTS IN FLOWER SHOWS
The continuing interest in Japanese arrangements indicates there is a place
for them in flower shows. We have endeavored to master the techniques and
hopefully the spirituality of this creative art. Include a class “in the
Japanese manner” and see how much interest it stimulates.
These classes may be simplified versions of Japanese styles and free
expressions. The Moribana, water-reflecting style, seems to be a favorite in
many shows. The Morimono, fruit and/or vegetable arrangement might be another
possibility, if restraint is used on the part of the arranger and we don’t have
a “horn of plenty”. Floor designs could be incorporated if there are skilled
arrangers who have mastered these mass constructions. Schedule writers should
always know the capabilities of their exhibitors. If there is an Ikebana
International Chapter, a particular school chapter or study group in your
vicinity, they could be consulted on schedule writing and encouraged to enter
your show. Addition of some well executed Japanese designs could improve the
excellence of the flower show.
