Dear 2020 Virtual Photo Contest Entrant,
Thank you for accepting the challenge to make 1955 Ohio Association of Garden Clubs President Daisy Sticksel proud by SHARING your images in the 2020 Virtual Photo Contest! The response was tremendous, requiring extra time to manage the data from over 850 images submitted by 67 entrants representing all regions save two. Entrants included junior gardeners, members at large and even life members residing out of state!

The panel of regional horticulture chairpersons were challenged to select exceptional entries, needing three go-rounds to reach consensus. Images were assigned a number and judged blindly, without knowledge of the entrant. The following are some of the judges’ comments: “That was so hard!!!! What wonderful photos! Such technical skills and great shots. Boy these categories keep getting harder! So many of these pictures could be calendars! Just beautiful. There are just amazing photographers out there, they should all be proud!” Factoring in online correspondence also required additional time, thank you for your patience and understanding while awaiting results.

The following evaluation considerations were utilized to recognize the top four placements; images ‘in-the-running’ were also noted as honorable:

  • Contest goals: ‘perfect’ subjects not expected, but may have been.
  • Category conformance: as requested by the entrant.
  • Expression: elicits a response from the viewer; communicates a mood or feeling.
  • Creativity: ordinary revealed as not so ordinary.
  • Distinction: original, WOW! factor.
  • Photo: in focus, of good quality, high tech not expected, but may have been.

Congratulatory letters, certificates and ribbons have been mailed to those earning the top four placements per category. First place awardees will be published in the spring issue of The Garden Path. Meanwhile, to view all entries, including those placed and honorable, go to the online links for each category shared via the OAGC website.

Thanks again for taking the time to SHARE, all members will be beneficiaries of your effort!
