Wild Day Out – Cincinnati Zoo
April 12 - April 13$35
Spring is nature’s way of saying “Let’s Party!” It brings a rebirth after dreary days of winter with spring blooms, flowering branches and fun times at the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Gardens on April 13 when the Ohio Association of Garden Clubs will enjoy a Wild Day Out.
The Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Gardens is the second oldest in The United States having opened to the public in 1875. The zoo started out modestly with just 65 acres of land and a few animals including monkeys, grizzly bears, deer, a retired circus elephant, and a few others; however, the bird collection was large with over 400 at the time.
The zoo has earned the honor of being the greenest zoo in America. Over 1.5 million people a year visit this zoo that is also recognized as one of the top ten zoos in the country. In 1987 the zoo was also named a historic landmark due to the architecture in some of the animal houses. The reptile house is the oldest original zoo structure in the country.
In 1986 the Cincinnati Zoo joined forces with The Lindner Center for Conservation and Research of Endangered Wildlife to start a captive breeding program. Trumpeter swans and sea lions were the first animals in the program. Since then, the zoo has also taken part in the breeding of rhinoceroses, cheetahs, tigers, gorillas and several others. The zoo also offers a four- year college preparatory course for the Cincinnati public school system that began in 1975.
The Cincinnati Zoo currently features more than 500 animals and 3,000 plant species which make it one of the largest zoological collections in North America.
On Friday evening, April 12, our speakers will be Ron Wilson and Pat Greeson of Natorp’s Nursery, Mason, OH. Join these two gardening experts as they take a look at what’s hot and what’s not in 2019 gardening. A few gardening points to ponder and who knows what else these two may have up their gardening gnome sleeves! The program is at 7 pm at the Hampton Inn and Suites located at 3024 Vine Street, close to the zoo.
On Saturday, we will have registration at 9:30 am, with a guided tour of the zoo and gardens to follow. “The Tulips” lunch will be at noon in one of the zoo’s enclosed facilities. Scott Beuerlein, manager of Botanical Gardens Outreach, will talk on the zoos favorite plants. “We’re a 70-acre botanical garden that shows how diversity in an urban landscape can really influence the way a place looks and feels.” He adds, “We’re creating a good place a safe, happy environment where people want to spend time. It’s comfortable, it’s shady and it’s beautiful.”
After Scott’s session, visitors will be free to explore more of the zoo or visit some of the local garden centers. The Cincinnati Reds are in town playing the St. Louis Cardinals and you might want to add that to your list for a fun family weekend.
The $35 cost for the day includes admission, parking, garden tour and lunch. Registration deadline is March 30. With the day being a Saturday, bring the kids, grandkids or great-grandkids at a rate of $25 for ages 18 and under. Pre-day events are at the Hampton Inn and Suites on Friday night with a $5 cost. Plan to spend a WILD DAY OUT with us at the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Gardens.
